Additive manufacturing (from the word "additivity" meaning "added") is the layer-by-layer growth and synthesis of an object using 3D computer technology.
Today, additive manufacturing is one of the fastest-growing areas of digital manufacturing.
These technologies significantly accelerate research and development, as well as the preparation of new products.
Computer modeling of technological processes, the transition to digital product description and design, and rapidly developing additive technologies have revolutionized foundries and industry.
This has been particularly noticeable in high-tech industries such as aviation and aerospace, the nuclear industry, medicine, instrumentation, and automotive manufacturing—industries characterized by small-scale, often one-off production, as well as industries where pilot or trial production precedes series production.
This is where moving away from traditional technologies and adopting new methods for producing casting molds and models using additive manufacturing offers the opportunity to radically reduce the time it takes to develop new product launches.

Modern manufacturing today requires engineers with fundamental knowledge and practical skills in mathematical modeling, 3D design, and engineering analysis of technological processes, tooling, and equipment (using CAD, CAE, and CAM systems), as well as knowledge and skills in the maintenance and safe operation of highly automated equipment and robotic systems.
Students who choose the "Additive Technologies in Foundry" specialization will, in addition to mastering all the basic disciplines in foundry manufacturing, gain in-depth knowledge of additive technologies, mathematical modeling, computer-aided design, and engineering analysis.

Specialization

1-42 01 01-01 03 Metal science, technology and equipment for heat treatment of metals

Modern metals and alloys are the strategic foundation of industrialized countries. Civilization is rapidly mastering advanced alloys and methods of strengthening them. Along with traditional steels, special alloys based on aluminum, titanium, magnesium, superalloys based on cobalt, nickel, etc. are actively being developed and used. An understanding of the whole variety of modern alloys is taught in this specialty. Active interaction with institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and leading enterprises allows students to master modern computerized equipment for volumetric and surface hardening. Information technologies are studied by students and used to analyze the structure and performance properties of alloys. Only a student of metallurgy knows well why some alloys become stronger after quenching, while others become softer, why an “aged” alloy is stronger than a “young” one, which ones are better - European or Asian, etc.

There is a catastrophic shortage of specialists who understand modern alloys and understand the nature of hardening and softening of alloys. There are few of them abroad either. Therefore, this specialty is in acute shortage. Up to 50% of organizations' applications for metal engineers remain unsatisfied - there are not enough graduates. A significant portion of graduates remain to work in Minsk organizations and leading enterprises. Graduates are willingly hired by research organizations of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. A number of graduates successfully work abroad. Among our graduates are directors of enterprises, university professors, and successful businessmen. The shortage of metal engineers and the modern knowledge gained ensure rapid career growth for qualified graduates.

Specialization

1-42 01 01-01 04 Computer-aided design of foundry and metallurgical processes

During the training process, students acquire in-depth knowledge in general educational and special disciplines related to the theory and practice of computer modeling and design of technological processes for producing castings from alloys of ferrous and non-ferrous metals into one-time and permanent casting molds; design of technological equipment; calculation of heating and melting furnaces; calculating the probability of chemical reactions occurring during the process of smelting and refining of metal; modeling the processes of crystallization and cooling of the melt; control of the process of structure formation of alloys; standardization and certification of products; environmental protection.

Students become familiar with the principles of functioning of information systems and technologies in the field of foundry and metallurgical production, the work of specialized and universal application software packages - LVMFlow, ProCAST, PolygonSoft, ANSYS, etc. - for computer-aided design and computer modeling of technological processes and equipment.
