On Thursday, May 14, Nadezhda Igorevna Remez, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Automobile Roads of FTC BNTU, held a career guidance meeting with students of the 5 "B" class at Secondary School No. 225 in Minsk. The event took place as part of the thematic week "Where Parents Work" and turned into a warm and fascinating conversation about the massive world of transport construction and road safety.
Roads as the Circulatory System of the Country
For the fifth-graders, this meeting became a real discovery of the hidden side of familiar things. Nadezhda Igorevna told the children that automobile roads are not just asphalt under wheels, but a crucial strategic component of any state. Special emphasis was placed on the unique geographical position of Belarus: located in the very center of Europe, our country acts as a key crossroads for many international transit corridors.
The schoolchildren were surprised to learn about the huge number of nuances, calculations, and engineering secrets hidden from the eyes of an ordinary pedestrian or passenger. To build a truly effective, durable, and, most importantly, safe highway, specialists take into account the landscape, climate, traffic intensity, and even soil characteristics.
The Formula of a Future Engineer: Logic and Creativity
Together with the BNTU lecturer, the kids reflected on the qualities a modern road engineer should possess. Presenting the profession of a lecturer and an engineer, Nadezhda Igorevna gave the students valuable advice: laying the foundation for a future successful career needs to start right from the school bench.
The students of 5 "B" agreed that it is important for future builders of transport communications to focus on technical subjects — mathematics and physics — already now. However, dry accuracy is not everything. During the lively discussion, the guests and the speaker came to an important conclusion: modern road construction requires out-of-the-box, creative thinking, since creating complex interchanges, bridges, and "smart" road infrastructure is always a constructive and creative process.
A Safe Summer on Safe Roads
The profession of a road engineer is inextricably linked with caring for human lives. That is why a logical and very important continuation of the conversation was a five-minute safety briefing ahead of the upcoming summer holidays.
Nadezhda Igorevna reminded the children that the very efficient and safe roads designed at BNTU require mutual responsibility and strict compliance with traffic rules from pedestrians and cyclists. Reviewing the rules of behavior in courtyards, at pedestrian crossings, and when using personal mobility devices (kick-scooters and bicycles) became a warm and caring finale to the meeting.
The Faculty of Transport Communications of BNTU sincerely thanks the administration of Secondary School No. 225 in Minsk and the pupils of the 5 "B" class for the warm welcome, bright eyes, and lively interest in the profession. Who knows, perhaps it is among these children that those who in a few years will join the student body of FTC and continue to develop the road network of our country are growing up right now!
