From February 12 to 13 in Grodno, the competitions of the Republican Universiade in karate among men and women were held, in which 16 teams from higher education institutions took part.
It should be noted that the level of competition was quite high, members of the national team of the Republic of Belarus, champions and prize-winners of the world and Europe in karate, such as masters of sports of international class Oleg Melekhin (Moscow State University named after Kuleshov), Ivan Korobov ( Kuleshov Moscow State University), Daria Trebko and others.
Karate competitions are traditionally held among men and women in two sections: kata (when athletes demonstrate their technical skills) and kumite (a duel between two athletes). These sections are held in different ways.
In kata, athletes (men and women) are divided into two subgroups by lot and 2 athletes are eliminated in each round until the finalists are determined. Also in this section there are individual and team performances (consisting of three people).
In kumite, men and women have five weight categories. Women have the following weight categories: up to 50 kg, 55 kg, 61 kg, 68 kg, and over 68 kg; in men: up to 60 kg, 67 kg, 75 kg, 84 kg, and over 84 kg.
