The Higher Architectural School of Belarus trains architects of a wide profile. University graduates are awarded a diploma with the qualification “architect”, and they receive the right to engage in creative activities in all areas of urban planning and architecture: in design and research institutes and their departments; organizations and enterprises of the construction profile; bureaus and groups licensed to carry out project work; at university departments performing research in the field of architecture; in government bodies governing architectural and urban planning activities at the city, district, regional, and national levels.
The architect shapes the human environment by designing construction, landscape and urban planning objects, each of which is a complex social, artistic, and ecological system.
In the process of obtaining higher education, students master the basic principles and practical skills of designing various types of residential, public and industrial buildings and structures, planning populated areas, and forming urban complexes and ensembles.
The main major discipline in the preparation of a future architect is “Architectural Design”, where scientific and technical knowledge is integrated in the creative process and acquires the character of an integral system. The study of the discipline begins with the 1st year and ends with a diploma project. The main principle of architectural design is a comprehensive method for solving functional-planning, design-technical, compositional-artistic and economic problems in their organic interaction.
Instructional design is closely linked to:
with real design - by involving students within the educational process in fulfilling orders from various design organizations, territorial authorities, the Ministry of Architecture and Construction of the Republic of Belarus, secular and religious public organizations, etc.;
with scientific research - by mastering standard research methods by all students within the framework of compulsory design disciplines, introducing students to planned scientific works of departments and custom research during diploma design;
with the cultivation of wide activity of students - by involving them in participation in various creative projects and competitions (music and dance groups have been created at the faculty);
with extensive international contacts - by attracting students to participate in international exhibitions, competitions, and conferences.
The curriculum includes a comprehensive compositional, artistic, scientific and technical education on a general humanitarian basis. The student studies fundamental and applied general technical and engineering sciences, special architectural disciplines, professional computer programs, courses in the history and theory of art, architecture and urban planning, and also acquires professional skills in drawing, painting and sculpture.
Initial courses provide the student with general humanitarian, artistic, socio-economic and general technical training, allowing him to engage in real design in auxiliary positions.
Senior courses ensure that students acquire deep professional knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for creative solving of architectural problems and development of project documentation. The training ends with the completion of a qualifying thesis (graduation project, including a research one), the successful defense of which allows the graduate to be awarded the qualification “architect”.
After receiving a diploma, a graduate of the Faculty of Architecture has the opportunity to enroll in a master's program in the chosen specialty. The most capable and scientifically inclined architects are accepted into it. It provides for in-depth specialization in the areas of development of architectural and construction projects, architectural and landscape, urban planning, territorial planning objects, interiors, urban design, as well as in the field of managing the development of settlements and territories. Master's studies are completed by completing qualifying work (a project with a developed research component or independent scientific research). After its successful defense, the architect is awarded a Master of Architecture degree.
The faculty constantly trains highly qualified scientific personnel. After completing graduate school, completing and defending qualifying work, the degree “PhD of Architecture” is awarded.
The specifics of the architectural profession, and, consequently, education, require applicants, along with the acquired general educational knowledge, to have a penchant for fine arts, skills in drawing, drafting, developed three-dimensional thinking, a sense of color, harmony, and the ability to be creative. Therefore, applicants, as a rule, need intensive pre-university training, either versatile (college of architecture) or artistic (specialized lyceum, school, courses).
Increased aesthetic and environmental requirements for the modern environment of our cities and villages have led to the emergence of a new architectural specialty - “Architectural Design”. The leading areas of creative interests of a specialist architect-designer are the integrated design of the architectural and spatial environment, the artistic formation of the cultural landscape, the development of natural and ecological connections, the linking of the subject complex to spatial situations, the formation of artistic and stylistic, light, coloristic, compositional and plastic characteristics of building interiors, interiors of settlements (“urban interiors”).
The preparation of an architect-designer, like the preparation of an architect, involves two stages. Preparedness for project work is basic, determining the fundamental possibility of professional activity in research, administrative, managerial and teaching activities.
The basic department for training specialists in the field of architectural design is the Department of Design of the Architectural Environment, which is developing a strategy for the design of the architectural environment, which is in demand for the Republic of Belarus.
The educational process is constantly being improved on the basis of innovative forms and methods of teaching, the introduction of new educational and information technologies.
The main major discipline in the preparation of the future architect-designer is “Architectural design”. During their studies, the student masters the basic principles and practical skills of designing not only traditional objects of professional activity for an architect, but also such architectural and design objects as: equipment and subject content of the environment; means of visual communications of internal and open urban spaces; architectural coloristics; artificial light system; small landscape and architectural forms, architectural and design forms, monumental and decorative elements of environmental design (works of monumental and decorative art, art design). Educational architectural design is closely linked with real design, with scientific research, with nurturing high student activity, and with broad international contacts.
University graduates with a degree in Architectural Design, after completing a qualifying thesis (thesis project, including a research one) and successfully defending it, are awarded a diploma with the qualification “architectural designer”, and they receive the right to engage in creative activities in the field of architecture and design. Graduates can work as architects-designers in design and research organizations of various forms of ownership; in the field of landscape design, gardening art; in organizations and enterprises of the construction industry; in research institutes, university departments; in architectural and design enterprises and firms engaged in the development and manufacture of interiors, furniture and equipment of various profiles; in the field of design and production of visual information objects; in the education system (teachers of fine and spatial arts in secondary schools, architectural and art schools, gymnasiums and colleges); in government bodies and local self-government of administrative-territorial entities; conduct your own design and artistic practice.
