The digital industry has long outgrown the boundaries of standard software development. Today, the market demands engineers capable of integrating complex software into real-world processes – from controlling unmanned systems to setting up intelligent production lines. The educational system of the Faculty of Information Technology and Robotics at the Belarusian National Technical University is built on this balance of software engineering, artificial intelligence, and applied automation.
What is the Faculty of Information Technology and Robotics like?
Today, the faculty has over 1,500 students, including international students, confirming the international level of its educational programs. Training is provided in the most in-demand fields: Software Engineering, Information Systems and Technology, Robotics Systems, and Automation of Technological Processes and Production.
We spoke with Yulia Mazanik, Dean of the Faculty, about why applicants should choose the Faculty of Engineering and Robotics.
"The faculty's main advantage is the combination of fundamental engineering training and modern digital technologies. Students gain in-depth knowledge in mathematics, programming, systems analysis, automation, and robotics. This foundation enables graduates to successfully build professional careers," Yulia Mazanik emphasized.
Theory is inseparable from practice here. The educational process takes place in laboratories equipped with modern equipment, and talented students are involved in real-world science from their first years.
"In June 2026, BNTU and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University signed an agreement to establish a joint research laboratory within our faculty. We also have a student robotics research laboratory. Our students participate in international forums such as TIBO and WorldSkills Belarus competitions, and actively develop applied products. One striking example is the "CartOn" project: sharing convenient carts for transporting heavy bags from the store to home," the dean shared.
The faculty is also actively expanding international cooperation. For example, on April 15, 2026, BNTU and Nanjing University signed an agreement to establish the China-Belarus Institute of Outstanding Engineers. This provides the best undergraduate students with a unique opportunity to continue their studies in a joint master's program at the two universities.
With the country's economy undergoing digital transformation and the implementation of Industry 4.0 technologies, employment is practically a non-issue for graduates. Practical training takes place both at the university and at leading research institutes and IT companies (InnoTech Solutions LLC, Technikon LLC, etc.), as well as at industrial giants such as MAZ, MTZ, BELAZ, Atlant CJSC, and Peleng OJSC.
"Our graduates undoubtedly remain among the most sought-after specialists in the Belarusian labor market. Many students receive job offers while still completing their internships or in their final years of study," noted Yulia Mazanik.
Advice for applicants
With the start of the admissions campaign approaching, choosing a major becomes a top priority for thousands of applicants. Yulia Mikhailovna offered this key piece of advice to future first-year students:
"I would advise applicants to approach their future profession consciously. Today, information technology and robotics are among the most dynamically developing fields, but success in this field requires not only an interest in modern technology but also a willingness to constantly learn." Student Life at the Faculty
Everyday life at the faculty isn't limited to algorithms and software development. In the cultural sphere, the FITR teams traditionally hold the bar for leadership in the comedy genre, regularly winning awards in the STEM categories at the main festival, "BNTU Spring," and also excelling at "Freshman's Day" and the artistic skills competitions "Miss BNTU" and "Mr. BNTU."
On the sports field, faculty representatives also confidently compete for top awards. Teams regularly win gold in mini-football and take prizes in volleyball and streetball at the traditional "Six Cup" competition. The student council, the primary student trade union, and BRSM are responsible for organizing internal quests, developing self-governance, and providing comprehensive student support.
Housing for out-of-town first-year students is immediately resolved upon admission – they are guaranteed places in dormitories No. 5, 12, and 18, which offer both corridor-style and block-style accommodation. All are conveniently located either directly adjacent to the academic campus or in the center of the campus.
