Today, September 2, the Belarusian National Technical University hosted a ceremonial meeting between Rector Sergei Kharitonchik and first-year students. The event, which has become a long-standing tradition at the university, set the right rhythm for the entire academic year and helped these recent applicants feel confident in their abilities.
Sergei Vasilyevich began his speech with a sincere acknowledgement that for everyone in the audience, this is the beginning of a crucial stage in their development—a truly independent life. Thus, the rector began his immersion in the university's unique characteristics with the key principle: education here is built on the inseparable unity of education, science, and innovation. According to him, a technical university teaches not just theory, but real creativity:
"I believe that an engineer who hasn't created anything tangible in their life that can be demonstrated, presented, and used by people is wrong. Innovation is very important to us. What we can take in our hands and implement in the real sector of the economy is the main result of your future work."
Then the conversation turned to the scale of BNTU, which is truly impressive even by global standards. Sergey Kharitonchik told the first-year students about the structure of his alma mater: 20 faculties, 19 dormitories, the Polytechnic Science and Technology Park, a recognized leader in the production of high-tech medical products, creative teams, a sports facility, and much more. The university is constantly renewing itself – in the last six months alone, modern academic buildings No. 15 and No. 21 opened their doors. Speaking about these projects, the rector recalled the words of the President of the Republic of Belarus: the university's goal is to cultivate not only technical geniuses but also true patriots, ready to protect and develop their country.
The university's head placed particular emphasis on the continuity of generations. The history of the Polytechnic University is inextricably linked with outstanding individuals who have shaped the development of national and global science, mechanical engineering, and industry. The university's alumni – space explorers, renowned Olympic champions, and winners of prestigious competitions – remain a source of pride. The rector emphasized that BNTU always has a role model, and every first-year student is capable of continuing this distinguished line.
Sergey Kharitonchik also emphasized the university's international standing. BNTU firmly holds a position among the top rankings in prestigious global rankings, and today, thousands of international students from dozens of countries study here. The university develops close scientific and educational ties with leading universities in China, Russia, Uzbekistan, and Africa, opens joint engineering schools, and regularly hosts major youth initiatives – from the Union State Forum of Engineering and Technology Universities to the International Student Athletics Race and international festivals.
However, behind all these opportunities and prospects lies the student's personal hard work. Turning to the topic of the discipline, Sergey Vasilyevich urged new Polytechnic students to assert themselves from the very first day and not get lost in the crowd of thousands, as well as to be responsible about their schedule and strictly adhere to the internal rules.
"It's important to me that each of you is visible at the university. If a student disappears, becomes a 'gray mouse,' that's not good. You must work for yourself and make a difference through your work: in studies, science, art, or innovation." The university provides every opportunity for this, but in return, as rector, I demand discipline, class attendance, and a responsible approach to your new, adult life," the rector emphasized.
After the speech, the meeting smoothly transitioned to an open dialogue, where first-year students were able to directly ask Sergey Vasilyevich their most pressing questions.
For example, a first-year student from the Automobile and Tractor Engineering Department inquired about what distinguishes a BNTU student from students at other universities. The rector's answer was unequivocal: a constructive approach and creative thinking always distinguish a BNTU student.
"Your opinions will always be well-reasoned; you won't allow yourself to speak about things you don't know. After a year of study, others will immediately notice this university training in you," remarked Sergey Kharitonchik.
Answering a question from the audience about how to make the most of their student years, the university's director encouraged the students to not be afraid of hard work and to absorb the knowledge imparted by their professors:
"Make yourself the best. If you have solid knowledge, then a high position and a large salary will find you in the future."
Speaking about his personal student experience, Sergey Vasilyevich recalled working in the "Tractors" laboratory and testing in the workshops of the Minsk Tractor Plant. According to him, it was there, standing in front of the machines and drawings, that he gained a clear understanding of why engineering is important.

When one of the first-year students asked about launching their own engineering projects, the rector reminded them of the student design bureaus within the faculties. He also explained that international internships can be applied for through the relevant faculty and to Yuri Nikolaychik, BNTU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, but priority will always be given to students with excellent academic performance and clear professional motivation.
The possibility of combining study with work was equally interesting. The rector emphasized that part-time work in the relevant field is encouraged, but studies must remain a top priority.
"You didn't come here to make a quick buck, but to accumulate a wealth of knowledge so you can earn a decent living with your intellect," replied Sergey Kharitonchik.
Summing up the meeting, the rector reminded the first-year students that they will never be alone on their new path. Sergey Vasilyevich emphasized that faculty, mentors, and faculty leadership are always there for students at the university. He also addressed the deans with special words: the rector called them true "fathers" to the students—strict but fair mentors who can scold them for good reason, but will always stand up for their students and help resolve any issue.
The traditional meeting set a steady pace. Ahead of them are their first lectures, lab work, and immersion into the vibrant university life.
