"Who is the dean's office and where is the semester?": a freshman's dictionary

«Кто такой деканат и где находится семестр?»: словарь первокурсника

Studying at the university is a new stage in life, which provides a person with the opportunity to gain even more useful knowledge, make new acquaintances and gain valuable memories. For those who are just starting their studies this year, we have collected the basic terms, which will help them get used to the new environment as soon as possible.

The structure of the University

The rector's office - is the administration of the university. At the level of the rector's office, the main issues related to the educational,, scientific and international work of the university are being resolved.

The Dean's office - is responsible for the work of the faculty. When questions arise, students apply here, and also bring all their applications, claims or petitions.

The methodical office – its employees (methodologists) deal with all the paperwork related to students: here they issue certificates at the request of students, register test books and exam sheets, issue student ID cards, etc. Each faculty has its own methodical office.

A department -  is a division of a faculty that conducts training in a particular industry and usually includes two or three specialties.

People at the university

The rector is the head of the university. He has deputy vice–rectors, each of them is responsible for a specific area of activity of the university.

The dean is the head of the faculty (he also has deputies).

The curator is the first person a freshman meets. He accompanies the study group for the first two years of study, conducts curatorial hours and advises on all issues that arise.

A teacher is a person who conducts lectures and seminars.

The scientific supervisor is a teacher who accompanies the student in writing various papers and preparing scientific projects.

The educational process

A semester is four months during which lectures and seminars are held. There are two semesters in one academic year.

A session is an exam period lasting about a month.

The test week is held before the session. At it, teachers take credits, which, by the way, are differentiated (with a mark) and undifferentiated (without any mark).

A couple of classes is one lesson  at the university. It lasts an hour and a half and can take place in different formats. These are mainly lectures and seminars.

A lecture is a type of lesson in which the teacher tells theoretical material. During the practical lesson, the information received at the lecture is worked out, so it is better to go there with a summary.

Laboratory work ("lab") is an independent practical work. On it, the student performs tasks independently, and then defends the course of his decision in front of the teacher.

A term paper is a written work that represents some kind of research or an abstract. It is written by a student for one semester.

The scholarship is a monthly cash payment that is credited to students studying at the expense of the republican budget. Its size depends on the student's academic performance.

Documents

A record book is a small but very important document that contains all the information about passing tests, exams, defending term papers and theses, as well as  practice. The record book should be provided to teachers for tests and exams.

A student ID is a document confirming that a person is studying at the university.

A library card is required to gain access to the university library.

The access card is a white plastic card that is needed to pass through the turnstiles to the BNTU territory.

Polytech's code words

Polytech is an unofficial, "national" name of BNTU. The fact is that when the university was founded, it was the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute, then the Belarusian State Polytechnic Academy, and in 2002 it was named the Belarusian National Technical University.

Profilak is how students call the sanatorium–dispensary of BNTU "Polytechnic" among themselves. Anyone can come here for a symbolic amount for half a month to rest, the main thing is to apply to the dean's office of their faculty on time.

The ship is the 15th BNTU academic Building. It got its nickname because of the unusual architecture, which resembles the design of an ocean liner in shape.

Freshman Day is a festival competition held by each faculty for first–year students. During it, each group presents a creative performance, and a competent jury selects the winner.

"Vesna" / "Vesna BNTU" is a festival of student creativity, where faculties present creative performances in four genres: song, dance, instrumental and STEM.

Every BNTU student knows the chant of his faculty. It's different everywhere, so it's better to ask senior students about it in advance: this knowledge will be useful more than once at university events.

Таким образом, мы привели лишь основные слова, которые помогут разобраться в механизме работы вуза и поскорее окунуться в учебную атмосферу. Желаем успехов и ждем встречи в Белорусском национальном техническом университете!
