HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
Knowledge in the field of urban planning forms the worldview of an architect, therefore, urban planning disciplines have been taught at the Belarusian architectural school since its inception.
In February 1969, the department was established as an independent structural unit. The first head of the department was People's Architect of the USSR, full member of the USSR Academy of Arts, Honored Builder of the BSSR, Associate Professor V.A. King. In 1982–1983 the head of the department was the honored architect of the BSSR, candidate of architecture, associate professor V.I. Anikin, from 1983 to 1994. - Doctor of Architecture, Professor A.V. Sychev, from 1995 to 2019 – the department is headed by Doctor of Architecture, Professor G.A. Potaev. In December 2019, the head of the department was appointed candidate of architecture, associate professor V.V. Vashkevich.
The department trains students, undergraduates and graduate students.
STRATEGY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The strategy and forms of educational and scientific work of the department are determined by the needs of the development of urban planning. The department works in creative contact with leading scientific and design organizations - "BELNIIPGRADOSTROYITELSTVA", "MINSKGRADO", "Minskgrazhdanproekt" and others. There is a branch of the department in the scientific and design institute "BELNIIPGRADOSTROYELSTVA".
COOPERATION OF THE DEPARTMENT
The international cooperation. The department has cooperation agreements with the Białystok University of Technology (Poland), with the Institute of Architecture and Urban Planning of the Poznan University of Technology (Poland), with the Faculty of Architecture of the Sapienza University in Rome (Italy), cooperates with the universities of Russia, Sweden, Iran.
ORGANIZATION OF THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS
Organization of the educational process. The department has 3 professors, doctors of architecture, 4 associate professors, a candidate of architecture, urban planners with extensive experience. The teachers of the department are leading scientists and practical urban planners, well known in the country and abroad.

The content of lecture courses is constantly updated taking into account new trends and methods of urban planning; lectures are accompanied by visual information using multimedia projection tools.
The teachers of the department have written more than 40 textbooks, educational and teaching aids, which have been published in Belarus, Russia, Poland, including in the last 5 years:
COURSE DESIGN
Students develop the following projects of urban planning specialization: "Planning and building a village for 1-3 thousand inhabitants", "Park", "Urban planning residential education", "City", "Reconstruction of a part of the city".
Students study for 5 years. After defending the diploma project, graduates receive a state diploma "architect" and work in public and private design organizations, in architectural and urban planning management bodies.
Education in the master's program is 1 year in a full-time master's program and 1.5 years in a part-time master's program. After defending a master's thesis, graduates receive a diploma "Master of Architecture".
Postgraduate study is 3 years in full-time postgraduate study and 4 years in correspondence postgraduate study. After defending their thesis, graduates receive a PhD diploma, foreign citizens receive a Doctor of Philosophy diploma.
Scientific work. The department is the leading scientific center of Belarus in the field of urban planning. Throughout the history of the department, its employees have participated in the implementation of state and international programs and plans for scientific research.
Employees of the department participated in the development of the Law of the Republic of Belarus "On the fundamentals of architectural and urban planning activities in the Republic of Belarus", the Urban Planning Doctrine of the Republic of Belarus, the Urban Planning Charter of the CIS, a number of regulatory and methodological documents on urban planning, analytical reports and other information and analytical materials for governments.

PUBLIC RECOGNITION OF THE DEPARTMENT TEACHERS
In 2017, Professor Potaev G.A. was awarded the Francysk Skaryna medal,
In 2017, Professor Chanturia Yu.V. awarded the gold medal of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Building Sciences,
In 2001, for a complex of studies on the theory of architecture (formation of the Belarusian scientific school), professors Iodo I.A., Potaev G.A., Sycheva A.V. were awarded the State Prize of the Republic of Belarus.
