IT and poetry: student Dmitry Povarov read poems about the war with the voice of a neural network

ИТ и поэзия. Студент Дмитрий Поваров прочитал стихи о войне голосом нейросети

At the Faculty of Information Technology and Robotics of the BNTU, they are used to the fact that students only write codes and programs. But 2nd year student Dmitry Povarov decided to prove that creativity does not have the last role in a technical university. The young man wrote a poem “About that war…”, and his teacher digitized it using artificial intelligence. The result is impressive, and the path is worthy of publicity.

Dmitry is not one of those poets whose lines are born by chance. Each of his poems is the result of long deliberations.

 – The impetus was the story about my great-grandmother Veranida Pavlovna Zhukovich. She went through the Great Patriotic War. I realized that I could not leave her feat without a trace.

So the lines were born. But the student went further. Instead of just posting the text on social media, he agreed to an experiment: to turn the poem into a full-fledged media product. The entire technological part was taken over by Nikolai Voyush, a lecturer at the Department of Software for Information Systems and Technologies. The task was quite challenging, as it was necessary to voice the poems so that the background sound was not a soulless robot, but a live and poignant voice of a veteran.

– My goal was only to show the young poet that you can make songs and videos out of his lines and thereby promote yourself, – shared Nikolai Viktorovich.

Nikolai Viktorovich has selected a specialized neural network for text-to-speech. The algorithm analyzed the emotional coloring of the lines "About that war..." and imposed the necessary intonations – pauses, whispers, growing pain. After that, the head of the department combined the real military chronicle with images created using neural networks.

– Nikolai Viktorovich has done a great job. He chose the neural network himself and edited the video sequence himself. In fact, he turned my text into a spectacular video. Without technology, only my friends would have heard my voice, but thousands of viewers would," Dmitry noted.

The example of Dmitry Povarov, a student of FITR, shows how you can save a story and tell about yourself.
