The concept of “Information and measurement technology” unites a wide class of electronic devices and systems that provide control and management of various objects and processes, from household appliances to automatic production lines and spacecraft; collection, processing and transmission of information (sensors, mobile communication devices, navigators, etc.); measurements in technology, medicine, scientific research, etc. Today there is no sphere of human activity in which information and measuring technology products would not be used. An electronic control unit for a refrigerator or an anti-lock braking system of a car, an automatic light switch on a staircase landing, an electrocardiograph in a clinic, a voice annunciator in a bus, various gadgets - every day any person interacts with hundreds of electronic devices, and their number is growing like an avalanche. In Russia, more than 30 universities train engineers in this specialty. In our republic, the basic higher education institution providing training in this specialization is BNTU.

The areas of activity of specialists who are trained in this specialization are: design of measuring instruments and information-measuring systems, industrial and consumer electronics products; development of software for information and measurement systems; installation, adjustment and maintenance of technical information and measuring equipment, including process automation systems, medical diagnostic and therapeutic systems and complexes, etc.; development of regulatory and technical documentation for measuring instruments and other electronic products; metrological support of measuring instruments and information-measuring systems; research and development.

During the training process, students receive in-depth knowledge in the field of digital and analog circuitry, programming, sensor technology, physics and measurement technology, computer technology, and information transmission theory. In the teaching of special disciplines, the emphasis is on modern computer design and modeling tools; students learn in practice the programming of microcontrollers, systems on programmable logic integrated circuits, and “systems-on-a-chip”.

To ensure high-quality training of engineers, specialized laboratories equipped with modern equipment have been created at the Department of Information and Measuring Equipment and Technologies, and there is a base for conducting scientific research. In the research laboratories of semiconductor technology and optical-electronic instrumentation, a complex of works is being carried out to develop new measuring instruments and information-measuring systems, which allows the most active students to be involved in the research process, provides a basis for the practical implementation of their ideas, including within the framework of coursework and diploma design.

The department has master's and postgraduate courses.

Graduates of the department work in various fields related to the development and operation of information and measuring technology:

in industry - as engineers and managers for the development and implementation of innovative projects related to the use of electronic and software tools;
in scientific centers - as researchers involved in the development of hardware and software systems for all areas of the economy, space systems, sensor systems, etc.;
in small and joint ventures for the development and production of systems on microcontrollers for civilian and special purposes, incl. military use.
