The Department of "Laser Technology and Technology" educates engineers in one of the most steadily growing fields of science and technology. Over the past five years, annual growth in the field of laser systems has exceeded 6% in monetary terms ("Annual Laser Market Review and Forecast: Where have all the lasers gone?", Laser Focus World, January 23, 2017). Moreover, industry experts unanimously agree that the widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles, drones, and autonomous industrial robots in the near future will lead to a sharp increase in demand for lidars. For instance, Uber alone plans to replace over a hundred thousand drivers with autonomous vehicles today ("Uber's First Self-Driving Fleet Arrives in Pittsburg This Month", Blumberg, August 23, 2016). Consequently, the need for engineers in the field of optical and laser instrument engineering will continue to grow steadily, ensuring that graduates of the "Laser Technology and Technology" department will remain employable for decades to come, unlike many professions that may seem highly sought-after today.

Job Description: Development, design, optimization, and construction of laser systems with ultra-short pulse durations (femto- and picoseconds).
When I chose my specialty upon entering university, it was more of a heartfelt decision because none of my acquaintances, friends, or relatives had any idea about lasers and their applications. As a result, I have never regretted my choice. Throughout my career, I have worked in leading laser companies in Minsk, spent time in Japan, and currently live and work in Switzerland. The Department of Laser Technology and Technology equipped me with a set of knowledge and skills that have been extensively utilized in my daily practice. The professors have extensive experience that is constantly updated in line with the development of new technologies. Although the laser field is considered specialized, working in it makes you a specialist at least at the entry level in areas such as precision mechanics, electronics, thermodynamics, and programming.
I am deeply grateful to the Department and all the professors for the experience and knowledge I have gained.
My personal experience has shown that studying at the department, especially its master's program, provides opportunities to succeed both in engineering and scientific research projects, both in Belarus and abroad, where our diplomas and qualifications are universally recognized. In addition to working at one of the leading research organizations in the field of laser materials at the "International Laser Center of BNTU" (now the Research and Development Center for Opto-Mechatronics), and at one of the leaders in laser system manufacturing in Belarus, Solar LS, I have worked and continue to work in European organizations involved in the field of photonics. I spent several years at the University of Düsseldorf, working as an engineer on a project for the European Space Agency to create ultra-precision optical clocks, which are scheduled to be sent into space in 2022 to help understand certain aspects of the General Theory of Relativity. Currently, I work in Zurich for the Swiss company Onefive GmbH, one of the world leaders in the production of femto- and picosecond lasers. Thanks to our unique technologies and innovative approach, our company has become one of the leading suppliers of lasers for ophthalmology within just 10 years since the official release of our first product, with clients and partners including organizations such as the European XFEL (the world's largest free-electron laser) and CERN. I am delighted that my professional journey began at the Department of "Laser Technology and Technology" at the Faculty of Engineering Economics and Management of BNTU, an education that is associated with only the warmest and most pleasant memories for me.

All graduates from our department working in our company are recognized as highly qualified engineers. I can confidently say that the Belarusian school of optical instrument making is competitive and even leading in Europe.
When I applied for the specialization in Laser Technology and Technology, I had no idea what to expect. I chose it simply because the word "laser" sounded intriguing.
