English Language Department №1 hosts 25 members (2 associate professors, 11 senior lecturers, 9 teachers, 1 trainee teachers, 2 specialists) providing a range of English language disciplines for undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs at nine university faculties.
Our aim is to improve our students’ language and research skills for academic and professional communication in English and to help them build up their professional communicative competence in the foreign language. The training is facilitated by use of modern educational technologies, information and communication technologies (ICT), authentic audio- and video materials.
The Department staff have a close cooperation with degree granting departments which enable our students to not only develop skills of professional English language communication but also to deepen their professional expertise by means of the foreign language.
The Department is involved in a range of research and projects that include examining ways to make English language teaching and learning more effective. As part of a major research project "Innovative Technologies of Teaching Foreign Language Communication to Students of Technical Institutions of Higher Education" we are developing and updating ICT-based educational materials, teaching aids and instructional guidelines to regulate our students’ learning.
We have created effective English language training programs in all the disciplines assigned to the Department. We have designed a number of electronic educational and methodological complexes including basic training aids for the students of technical universities, grammar reference books, and educational materials for teaching profession-oriented oral communication, reading and translation of scientific and technical texts. The materials are also made use of by other technical universities throughout the Republic of Belarus.
The Department staff take an active part in international and national scientific conferences. They also provide research and English language supervision over students’ research work. Within the project of Days of Science in BNTU, the Department hosts an annual student conference covering a wide range of relevant topics across a broad range of disciplines.
The Department shares expertise and collaborates with English language departments of Tashkent State Technical University Named after Islam Karimov and Karshi Institute of Engineering and Economics. As a result of this, in terms of Cooperation Agreement, we have jointly produced teaching materials.
As part of off-budget activity of the University, the Department provides General English courses at all levels. The classes are conducted in a multimedia language lab using up-to-date equipment, both in the morning and evening shift.
