On November 20, the opening of a series of lectures started with a lecture entitled “Political economy: past, present and future”. The lectures were held by a famous Russian scientist, Doctor of Economic Sciences, Professor Mark M. Haykin, who visited the BNTU within the “Visit-Professor” program.
The professor holds the position of the Head of the Economic Theories Department at Saint-Petersburg Mining University and becomes a famous specialist in the area of political economy, economic theory, current trends in economic development, digital economics and subsoil use economics. Furthermore, Mark M. Haykin is the author of more than 300 scientific and educational publications, a multiple winner of grants in the sphere of economic sciences, a participant and organizer of several international and Russian academic and practical conferences.
The series of lectures was organized for the students of the Faculty of Management Technologies and Humanitarization and the students of Mining Engineering and Engineering Ecology Faculty. It included the lectures on the following subjects: “Political economy: past, present and future”, “Servicing of economic systems”, “The sphere of subsoil use in the context of economic systems development ”, “Economics of businesses in the field of subsoil use”.

Despite the shortage of time allocated for one lecture, a lot of relevant topics and issues were brought up during 90 minutes: the participants talked about the nature of political economy, outstanding economists, assessed the influence of economic theory on sector-based economics and discussed the stages of economic theory development as a science.
“The laws of economics are uniform, but the forms are different. Why will the American economic model never work for us? Completely different cultures, worldviews, the style of administration. Our people can’t tell the difference between freedom and anarchy”.
However, which economic model is better? The professor gave a simple answer: it is the model which provides a good standard of living. Mark M. thinks that the high standard of living will be reached when ecology and health care issues stand above economics.

During the lecture entitled “Political economy: past, present and future”, the professor paid particular attention to the resources, which fall into the production factors according to some scientists: entrepreneurship and a “specific resource” – information. The professor mentioned more than once how important it is to refer to history while studying the economic disciplines. “Normally, we can fully understand the state of modern economy only after comparing and evaluating different models and periods of economic development”, – explains Mark M. Haykin.
After finishing the lecture, students asked various questions and got extensive responses. The professor expressed his appreciation for the hospitality provided, being particularly grateful to the Associate Professor of Economics and Law Department Tatsiana V. Serhiyevich, who had taken all the responsibility for the organization of the professor’s visit to the BNTU. The Head of the Economics and Law Department Sergei Yu. Solodovnikov expressed his warm thanks to the professor of Saint-Petersburg Mining University.
