About the IX Scientific and Technical Translation Competition “One Belt, One Road”

О IX конкурсе научно-технического перевода «Один пояс, один путь»

From December 13 to 14, 2024, the IX scientific and technical translation competition "One Belt, One Road" was held at the BNTU Polytechnic Science and Technology Park.

For reference: the original idea of ​​the competition belongs to the diplomat, international orientalist, simultaneous interpreter of the Chinese language Anastasia Semashko. Participation in it allows young specialists not only to practice Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian translation, but also to meet colleagues, introduce themselves to potential employers.

Traditionally, the competition was held in two categories: "Students" and "Professionals". A total of 28 representatives of the Republic of Belarus, the People's Republic of China, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Latvia spoke. Over the course of two days, the participants demonstrated their skills in the field of Russian-Chinese and Chinese-Russian scientific and technical translation.

The contestants' skills were assessed by competent jury members:

  • International orientalist, simultaneous interpreter, author of a course on oral translation from/into Chinese, the "Translation Workshop" project and the international competition of scientific and technical translation "One Belt, One Road" Anastasia Semashko;
  • Senior lecturer of the Department of Oriental Languages, Faculty of International Relations, Belarusian State University Ksenia Leshchenko;
  • Chinese translator of the Representative Office of China Railway Construction Corporation No. 9, graduate of the Dalian Technological University with over 10 years of experience in Chinese companies, accredited guide-interpreter Valentina Vashchilko;
  • Director of the Confucius Institute for Science and Technology of BNTU from the Chinese side Li Wenxue;
  • Sinologist, simultaneous interpreter of the Chinese language Irina Seregina;
  • Project manager of the Department of Medium, Large and Largest Business of Sberbank Ma Jin Yu;
  • Master of Oriental Studies, practicing translator with 10 years of experience, certified guide-interpreter, manager of international projects in a large automobile company Ekaterina Nemenenok;
  • Lecturer at the Confucius Institute for Science and Technology of BNTU Liu Ziying;
  • Lecturer at the Confucius Institute for Science and Technology of BNTU Zhou Lingling;
  • Lecturer at the Confucius Institute for Science and Technology of BNTU Akebota;
  • Lecturer at the International Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Niu Di.

On Friday, December 13, a qualifying round was held for the contestants in the "Students" category, which consisted of three tasks. Participants competed in the skill of self-presentation in a foreign language, oral translation from sight and oral translation by ear.

Following the results of the first competition day, eight participants in the "Students" category made it to the final. They were congratulated by the Vice-Rector for Ideological and Educational Work of BNTU Timur Matyushinetz and the Vice-Rector of the International Institute of Management and Entrepreneurship Mr. Han Wenyuan.

There was no qualifying round for "Professionals", they, like the "Students" who made it to the final, had to compete for the title of winner on the final day.

On Saturday, December 14, representatives of the "Students" category tested themselves in four tasks. Participants were asked to demonstrate their knowledge in translation biathlon, sight translation, oral translation and consecutive translation of bilateral business negotiations.

For "Professionals" the competition tasks included sight translation, listening translation, consecutive translation of bilateral business negotiations and simultaneous translation.

Based on the results of the competition tests, the participants divided the prize places as follows:

in the category "Students":

  • First place - Yana Barvyankova;
  • Second place - Ksenia Kasperskaya;
  • Third place - Anna Goldin.

n the category "Professionals":

  • First place - Alena Bavtrukevich;
  • Second place - Chen Xiao;
  • Third place - Wang Wenhai.

Students who showed their best side were awarded certificates of participation in the event for the exchange of experience and best practices at Sberbank.
