How to Become a Donor and Save a Life: Themed Lecture Held at BNTU

Стать донором и спасти чью-то жизнь. В БНТУ прошла тематическая лекция

Today, October 2, a lecture on the importance of blood donation was held at the Belarusian National Technical University. It was conducted by Yulia Chabanenko, a specialist from the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Transfusiology and Medical Biotechnologies.
The speaker explained to students that donor blood is needed by patients daily and that over 50% of the supply is used to treat oncological diseases. She also noted that transfusions are required in cases of significant blood loss, such as after traffic accidents.
In addition to statistics, Yulia Chabanenko outlined the different types of donation. Whole blood is used for transfusions following major blood loss; plasma is used to treat burns and severe infections; platelets are used for cancer patients; and red blood cells are used for patients with anemia. Each type of donation has its own specific characteristics and frequency requirements. The specialist emphasized that regular donation helps maintain the necessary stocks of blood and blood components.
Students learned about donor eligibility, how to prepare for donation, the stages of the procedure, and the donor's recovery time.
Furthermore, the specialist mentioned that monetary compensation is provided for blood donation, with regular plasma donors receiving higher compensation. Upon completing 40 blood donations or 80 component donations, a donor receives the title of "Honorary Donor of the Republic of Belarus." Honorary donors are entitled to priority medical care, discounts on utility bills and public transport fares, and other social support measures stipulated by the legislation of the Republic of Belarus.
The speaker also discussed the health benefits of donation. The procedure helps boost the immune system, stimulates blood cell formation, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, while regular donation "triggers a process" of bodily rejuvenation. However, it is important to remember that the body requires time to recover after donating.
The lecture helped dispel myths about the procedure and demonstrated that blood donation offers a real chance to save a life. We thank Yulia Chabanenko for this informative event.
