Historical background on the Day of the National Flag, the National Emblem and the National Anthem of the Republic of Belarus

Историческая справка ко Дню Государственного флага, Государственного герба и Государственного гимна Республики Беларусь

Today, on May 11, our country celebrates the Day of the National  Flag, the National  Emblem and the National  Anthem of the Republic of Belarus. This holiday was established by Presidential Decree No. 157 of March 26, 1998 and is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May. The holiday serves as an important occasion for reflecting on the historical path taken by the Republic of Belarus, strengthening patriotism among the population and fostering respect for state institutions.

The state symbols of Belarus are an integral element of the country's national identity, reflecting its history, cultural values and political aspirations. As a sovereign state, the Republic of Belarus has its own state symbols: the National  Flag, the National  Emblem, and the National  Anthem.

The choice of Belarusians, made 30 years ago, marked the triumph of historical justice and began the countdown of the peaceful, creative life of the young country,” the President noted in his congratulations.

Since 1917, the National  Flag and National  Emblem have changed repeatedly in Belarus. However, despite the differences, all versions of state symbols had a similar basis, which allows us to speak of their historical continuity.

Coat of Arms

The national coat of arms of the Republic of Belarus is a symbol of the state sovereignty of the country. It is a golden outline of the state border of the Republic of Belarus placed in a silver field, superimposed on the golden rays of the sun rising over the globe. There is a five-pointed red star at the top of the field. The emblem is framed by a wreath of golden ears, intertwined with clover flowers on the right and flax flowers on the left. The wreath is interlaced with a red-green ribbon three times on each side carrying two golden lines “The Republic of Belarus” (in Belarusian) in the middle of the foundation of the National Coat of Arms.

Flag

The national flag of the Republic of Belarus is a symbol of the state sovereignty of the country, it is a rectangular panel consisting of two horizontally arranged colored stripes: the upper one is red in 2/3 of the width of the flag, the lower one is green in 1/3.

Near the flagpole, there is a vertical Belarusian national ornament in red on a white field, which is 1/9 of the flag's length. The ratio of the flag's width to its length is 1:2. The flag is attached to a flagpole, which is painted golden (ochre).

Anthem

The National Anthem of the Republic of Belarus is a musical and poetic work performed on solemn occasions, the list of which is fixed in the legislation.

The national anthem has its authors: the music was written by the Belarusian composer Nestor Sokolovsky, the lyrics by the Belarusian poets Mikhail Klimkovich and Vladimir Karizna. The text of the anthem emphasizes the unity of the people, love for the Motherland and the desire for peace and prosperity.

The state symbols of Belarus embody the country's past, present and future, emphasizing the continuity of generations and forming a sense of pride and responsibility towards their state.

We congratulate Belarusians on this significant holiday for the country and wish prosperity to our beloved sovereign Belarus!
