Happy Student's Day, Polytechnic students!

С днем студента, Политеховцы!

Today, January 25th, is a special date in the calendar. For some, it's St. Tatiana's Day, for others it's just a winter holiday, but for hundreds of thousands of students across the country, it's Student's Day. It would seem that only recently, on November 17, we celebrated International Student's Day, but, fortunately for students, this holiday is celebrated twice a year in Belarus and each one has its own history.

Why is the holiday celebrated on Tatiana's Day?

The history of the holiday dates back to 1755, because it was on January 25 (January 12 in the old style) that Empress Elizabeth Petrovna signed a decree "On the establishment of Moscow University." The initiator of the project was Mikhail Lomonosov and Ivan Shuvalov. There is a version that Ivan Shuvalov specifically filed a petition on the day of his mother's name, Tatiana Petrovna. Thus, Saint Tatiana of Rome invisibly became the patroness of the new temple of science and future students.

Initially, the celebrations were held only in the imperial capital, but they were truly grandiose. However, by the second half of the 19th century, the holiday had already embraced all students of the Russian Empire. It became the day of universal student unity and, importantly, the official start of the holidays.

From tradition to the present

January is a special month for a student, and January 25 is a day with special traditions, which are based on congratulating Tatiana and banning her from studying. It is believed that on this day you can not read notes and study, so as not to scare off a great session. But you can take advantage of some good luck signs in your studies, namely, put a note under your pillow, participate in student competitions or charity events and not be sad on this day, because it was created for celebration and communication.

Congratulations to the students on this wonderful holiday! We wish that curiosity about new things would never fade, that complex formulas would be mastered, and that drawings would converge on the first attempt. Let ideas, knowledge and motivation lead you forward to a cherished diploma, a successful career, and the realization of the most ambitious projects. You are proud to bear the title of "BNTU student"!
