The department was founded in 1977 to train specialists in the field of optical instrumentation.
The department trains engineers to work at enterprises and organizations that develop, manufacture and operate modern optical, optoelectronic and laser devices, systems and complexes: OJSC Peleng, NP RUE LEMT, MMZ im. S.I. Vavilova, UE "KBTEM-OMO", JV "Zeiss-BelOMO", CJSC "Solar LS", CJSC "Solar TII", UE "Izovak", JV "Lotis-TII", RUE "Polimag", IP "Beltex-Optic" "(Lida), etc.
The main attention in the training of specialists is given to the methods of calculating optical systems, the design of optical and laser devices, the technology of optical production, the design of optoelectronic and laser devices, as well as their use in modern optical and laser technologies.
The faculty of the department includes 15 teachers, including 5 doctors and 7 candidates of sciences. To date, the department includes 7 educational laboratories, including laboratories for laser technology, optical systems, optoelectronic devices, assembly and alignment of optical devices, etc. In order to improve the level of training of specialists in the field of optical and laser instrumentation at the enterprise JSC " Peleng” created a branch of the department “Laser equipment and technology”.
The main directions of scientific research and development of the department are: development of new optical and laser materials and solid-state lasers based on them; advanced mirror optical systems; technologies and equipment for high-precision surface treatment of optical glasses and single crystals; optoelectronic devices for remote sensing of the earth. The department closely cooperates with the Scientific Research Center for Optical Materials and Technologies of BNTU (NIC OMT), which is one of the leading research centers of the republic in the field of laser materials and provides its laboratory facilities for educational and research work, preparation of graduation projects.
The department and SIC OMT maintain scientific relations with leading foreign scientific centers in the field of laser technologies. Joint research is being carried out with the Institute of General Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the All-Russian Scientific Center “GOI im. S.I. Vavilov”, Institute of Laser Physics of the University of Hamburg (Germany), University of St. Andrews (Great Britain) and others. Employees of the department and the center go on internships to conduct joint research.
