On October 10, 2019, fifth-year students of the Faculty of Transport Communications of the specialty 1-70 03 01 “Roads” as part of a lecture on the subject “Maintenance and repair of roads” visited RUE Minskavtodor-Center.
Senior teachers of the department «Highways» Reut J.V. and Hodan E.P. organized the excursion. The theme of the excursion is the organization of work on the winter maintenance of roads. The head of the traffic control service Zaitsev Alexander Philippovich conducted the excursion.
The main object of the Minskavtodor Center is to ensure the proper transport and exploitation condition of roads of republican significance in the Minsk region, as well as guarantee of the safe movement of vehicles with established speeds on them.
The main functions of monitoring the condition and quality of the maintenance of roads to comply with the relevant norms and standards are assigned to the road dispatch service, which performs round-the-clock monitoring and analysis of the condition of roads, and also takes strategic measures to ensure the safe and uninterrupted movement of vehicles.
During the tour, students got acquainted with the functions of the dispatch service, which is based on the work of a network of road measuring stations (DIS).
DISs are most in demand in the winter time, as they provide control over the state of the road surface and inform road users about hazardous weather conditions. With their help, they measure general weather parameters, determine the condition of the road surface, determine the actual weather (visibility, the presence of precipitation and their appearance), form a warning about the possible onset of ice.
DISs allow in the online mode (using cameras installed at measuring stations) to monitor the traffic situation. In particular, during an excursion, a traffic accident on the MKAD-2 was established. Students observed the participation of road services in the liquidation of the consequences of an accident, the bringing of the carriageway and road elements in accordance with the requirements of norms and standards.
I would like to note that the students were interested in the work of the road maintenance service, since most of them worked in road construction organizations during field trips. The guys asked a lot of questions regarding the functions and tasks of road maintenance departments, possible employment after graduation. After the excursion, many of them began to seriously consider the possibility of further linking their labor activities with road operating organizations.
