In the period from 06.02.2018 to 10.02.2018 the senior lecturer of the department "Automobiles" A.A. Filimonov with students from  group  10107215 M.V. Puhalsky and R.Yu. Yelenevich visited the 6th All-Russian Forum "Student Engineering Projects" (FS FORUM 2018), which was held at the Moscow State Automobile and Road Technical University (MADI), Russia. The trip was carried out at the invitation of the organizers of the forum.

The main building of MADI

The event was attended by representatives of student engineering teams performing in the world famous engineering series Formula Student, Formula Electric, Shell Eco-marathon, Baja, SmartMOTO, and Solar Car Challenge. The geography of the participants is extensive: teams of universities from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Belgorod, Bryansk, Ekaterinburg, Magnitogorsk, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhny Novgorod, Perm, Togliatti, Tyumen, Ulyanovsk, Ufa, Chelyabinsk, Cherepovets. In total, 32 teams from 20 educational institutions of higher education of Russia, as well as a delegation from BNTU took part in the forum.

Welcoming speech of the Chairman of the Forum - the first pro-vice-principal  of MADI O.A. Sudorgina

The program of the 6th All-Russian Forum "Student Engineering Projects" was informative and interesting. On the first day a lot of different master-classes were held. Also there were speeches of special guests: race driver Mikhail Aleshin, technical director of the racing team "ArtLine Engineering", multiple champion of the USSR and Russia in ring racing A. V. Potekhin.

On the second day of the forum, master classes were held in three sections: "Chassis, engine and aerodynamic hull", "Electronics, electrical equipment and programmable systems", "PR, management, logistics and economic disciplines".

The competition program of the 6th All-Russian Forum "Student Engineering Projects" included:

  1. Engineering competition on designing and programming "Autocorking", the purpose of which was the creation of an electric wheeled vehicle with a microprocessor control system.
  2. The ENGINEERING BUSINESS CASE competition, the purpose of which was to develop and provide a comprehensive business basis that would convince potential investors that the vehicle designed by the team most closely matches the market demand and that its production and sales will be profitable.
  3. Contest Real COST CASE, consisting in a detailed calculation of the cost of the vehicle.

In addition to listening the master classes and participating in competitions, the members of the student engineering teams made reports within the sections Chassis, Engine and Aerodynamic Corps, Electronics, Electrical Equipment and Programmable Systems, PR, Management, Logistics and Economic Disciplines. By the results of the reports sponsors of the event awarded with prizes the following categories:

  • The best technical project;
  • The best engineering solution;
  • The best photo work;
  • The best video;
  • The best article in the collection of reports.

On the final day of the forum, the senior lecturer of the department "Automobiles" A. A. Filimonov took part in the Round table of the Association of Automotive Engineers (AAE) "Student engineering projects in Russia: problems and ways of development" and the Round table "Training of engineering personnel for unmanned technologies in road transport". The events were held under the chairmanship of the President of the AAE, Ph.D. Zagarin D. A. with the participation of representatives of educational institutions of higher education in Russia and industrial companies. The problems of developing the world's largest engineering education projects, issues related to the design of cars and participation in international competitions, exchanged experience in the automotive industry were discussed.

During the interactive master-class "Adams: calculations and optimization of racing equipment", students of BNTU had the opportunity to personally get acquainted with the advanced software packages of MSC Software and carry out several tasks on designing a car suspension in the Adams program. Demonstration materials on MSC Software products were obtain in electronic form, including two models of student formulas cars.

During the trip, negotiations were held with the representative of MSC Software D.V. Nekhaev. The company offers special student free versions of its software products. Despite the some limited functionality, these versions can be successfully used by BNTU students in the educational process. For using in research and development sphere MSC Software delivers its software products to educational institutions, not limited in terms of functionality and size of tasks to be solved, at special prices that are significantly lower than the prices for enterprises.

In the course of informal communication with the team members, issues related to the design of cars, participation in international competitions and the process of assembling their own racing cars were discussed. Students of the teams showed initiative, great motivation, high level of independence and at the same time the ability to work in a team, responsible attitude to the common cause, showed their perspective to become high class professionals. The appearance of student engineering teams in BNTU would undoubtedly contribute to the further growth of the quality of training specialists.

The leading companies such as Bosch, MOTUL, Autodesk, National Instruments, MSC Software have shown great interest and were sponsors of FS FORUM 2018. There were demonstrated examples of how participation in the student engineering team allowed the graduate to get a prestigious and highly paid job in a well-known private company or at a leading state enterprise.

Senior lecturer of the department "Automobiles" A. A. Filimonov personally communicated with the design engineer, co-founder of OOO “Astrada” Alexei Serdyuk, thanks to which he received an oral invitation to participate with the car which BNTU has – Estonia-21M in the annual competition of historical racing cars in Russia.
