The Department of Powder Metallurgy, Welding, and Material Technology (PMWMT) at BNTU is a leading academic and research unit. Currently, the department is staffed by 4 professors, 10 associate professors, and 6 senior lecturers. It is led by Professor Fedor Ivanovich Panteleenko, a distinguished scientist of the Republic of Belarus, corresponding member of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, and Doctor of Technical Sciences.
The faculty has published over 20 textbooks and teaching aids, as well as approximately 20 monographs. The department’s research focuses on the theoretical and technological foundations for the creation and processing of new materials, including powder metallurgy, welding, surface hardening, and restoration.
Research is conducted under state scientific and applied research programs, as well as through contracts with enterprises in Belarus. The department actively collaborates internationally with scientific institutions and industrial enterprises from countries including Russia, Ukraine, China, Germany, Poland, Sweden, and India. Faculty members have received numerous awards, including State Prizes of the BSSR and RB, awards from the Council of Ministers of the USSR and RB, and medals and diplomas from the Exhibition of Achievements of National Economy (VDNKh) of the USSR and other international exhibitions.
The department houses a research laboratory for welding, related technologies, and non-destructive testing. This laboratory includes the Non-Destructive Testing Control and Measurement Center (accredited by BY/112 1.0517 since March 31, 2008) and the Welding Process Certification Authority (Gospromnadzor permission No. 06-43K-2012), adhering to European and international standards.

Since its inception, the department has awarded doctoral degrees to 10 faculty members and Ph.D. degrees to over 120 graduate students and candidates. The department also hosts internships for specialists from other educational institutions, including international participants.
Since 2003, the department has established branches at the Minsk Tractor Works (MTZ) and the Belarusian State Scientific and Production Powder Metallurgy Center (BGNPK) to train welding engineers and metallurgists, respectively. These branches facilitate practical and pre-graduate training for more than 20 students annually, who engage in modern manufacturing technologies and research projects, ensuring a higher level of practical, hands-on education.
The department trains engineer specialists for various sectors of mechanical engineering under the specialty “Equipment and Technology of Welding Production.” The curriculum provides comprehensive scientific, engineering, technological, and design training, including the theoretical foundations of welding processes, process design, production of welded structures, and the use of computer systems in welding production.
Students gain practical experience through industrial placements at leading enterprises and hands-on training in the department’s laboratories and workshops, equipped with modern equipment. Upon graduation, engineers can continue their education in master’s and doctoral programs, focusing on advanced welding technologies and theoretical research.

Within a short period, the department has trained over 20 master’s degree specialists in technical sciences. Graduates are employed across various sectors of the Belarusian economy, both in public and private companies, often holding positions such as welding process engineer, head of welding technology bureaus, and deputy chief technologist.
The department's history dates back to 1955 with the establishment of the "Metal Technology" department at the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute (BPI), which later evolved into the current department, leading innovations in powder metallurgy and related fields. Over the years, the department has trained more than 700 metallurgists and 500 welding engineers, including many who have earned advanced degrees and accolades for their contributions to science and industry.
