Department History
The Department of "Metallurgy of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Alloys" was established in June 2017 by merging two previously existing departments: "Metallurgy of Foundry Alloys" and "Metallurgical Technologies" (decree of BNTU Rector dated 16.06.2017 No. 907).
Each of these departments has its own creation and development history. The "Metallurgy of Foundry Alloys" department succeeded the "Foundry Production of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Metals" department, which was established in 1969. The first group of metallurgical engineers graduated in 1971. Since its inception, the department has trained over 1,720 specialists, including 39 engineers for 11 foreign countries and 52 masters. Many graduates hold senior positions and key roles in major industrial enterprises in Belarus and the CIS countries. The department's alumni have defended one doctoral and 44 candidate dissertations.
Several research developments by the department have received widespread recognition and high government praise. For developing and implementing a new technological process for producing high-quality aluminum casting using secondary alloys, department specialists (Dr. D.N. Khudokormov and PhD A.M. Galushko) were awarded the State Prize of the BSSR. Dr. V.I. Tutov's work on the study, development, and implementation of continuous horizontal casting of iron was recognized with the USSR Council of Ministers Prize. Research on the development of highly efficient technological processes for producing critical castings from high-strength iron by PhD S.N. Lekakh received the VLKSМ Prize. Seven department graduates (N.I. Bestuzhev, V.A. Glazkov, S.V. Dorozhko, V.A. Rozum, A.G. Slutsky, L.L. Shchislenok, and V.L. Tribushevsky) were awarded the LKSМB Prize for developing resource-saving technologies for producing critical auto-tractor castings.
The department's main research focuses on creating environmentally friendly and resource-saving technologies for refining and modifying foundry alloys to produce high-quality castings.
The department has been led by:
- Dr. Dmitry Nikolayevich Khudokormov (1969-1993);
- PhD Valentin Mikhailovich Korolev (1993-1999);
- Dr. Boleslav Mecheslavovich Nemenenok (since 1999), who currently heads the "Metallurgy of Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Alloys" department.
The history of the "Metallurgical Technologies" department began with the establishment of the Comprehensive Scientific-Production Laboratory "Problems of Metallurgical Production" (KNPL PMP) in 1988 by a joint order of the Ministry of Ferrous Metallurgy of the USSR, the Academy of Sciences of the BSSR, and the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute (now the Belarusian National Technical University). The laboratory was headed by V.I. Timoshpalsky. Prominent scientists such as Academicians of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus G.A. Anisovich, A.V. Stepanenko, S.A. Astapchik, and V.N. Chachin were instrumental in its creation.
To improve the system of training engineering personnel for the industrial complex of Belarus and to strengthen the scientific and technical ties between science and production, the "Metallurgical Technologies" department was established in May 2000 within the educational, scientific, and production association "BGPA - RUP 'BMZ'," based on the KNPL PMP (since May 2005, NIL "Theory and Technique of Metallurgical Processes").
The department has been led by:
- Dr. V.I. Timoshpalsky (2000-2008), who founded the new scientific direction "Resource and Energy-Saving Heat Technological Processes in Metallurgy";
- Dr. I.A. Trusova (2008-2017).
Within the scientific school at the department and the laboratory, two doctors of technical sciences and more than 20 candidates of technical sciences were trained. For the country's industrial complex, 590 specialists and 20 masters were prepared.
The main research focus of the department and the laboratory is the development of strategies for the advancement of the engineering and metallurgical complexes, as well as resource and energy-saving metallurgical technologies.
