Educational trip for students from POWER ENGINEERING FACULTY to Vitebsk
16th of March 2018 students from POWER ENGINEERING FACULTY, led by head of Dean  K.V. Dobrego carried out a visit to CHP sites of RUE Vitebskenergo in the framework of the educational project "New Resources".

All members of an expedition arrived to meeting place in time, despite the fact that the morning was very frosty. The trip started at 7 am.  Students took comfortable bus, provided by RUE Minskenergo, and headed directly to the Lukomlskaya PP, the hugest PP station in Belarus that covered about 30-35% of annual electricity demand. Its current capacity is 2.89 GWe, annual electricity production – around 10 billion kWh. Specific fuel consumption per kWh of electricity in  2017 was specified as 281.8 g of coal equivalent, and per Gkal of heat supply - 169.07 of coal equivalent. The staff number is around 1632 people.

After 2.5 hours the group of students finally arrived to PP, where the head of Lukomlskaya PP was welcomed them.  Students were divided into 2 groups: heat and power engineering students. Heat engineering group, led by  turbine plant chef engineer I.V. Screblo began their introduction survey of the station. Students were shown the turbine department and after they received helmets they got the safety training. PP consists of 8 generation blocks, only a some of them are under operation. The PP operate with full capacity seldom, therefore there is no need for the work of all eight blocks. The station has C-300-240 turbines with capacity 300 MW, produced by LMF and 8 TWH-320-2 generators  300 MW, produced by  “Electrosila”. Chef engineer clearly explained the P&I diagram. Boiler room was also shown to the visiting group. Students were surprised by the size of the largest boilers in the  country - four once-through two-furnace boiler type TGMP-114 and once-through one-furnace boiler type TGMP-314 produced by "Krasny Kotelshchik". The capacity of all boilers is 950 t / h, the steam parameters are supercritical (255 ata, 545 ° C).

The engineer took the group to combined-cycle power unit CCGT-400 with an installed capacity of 427 MWe, after the control panel of eight power units was introduced. The block, which is slightly away from the main building, was built and commissioned by the Chinese company CMEC in May 2014. The commissioning of a new combined-cycle plant allows to save annually 242 thousand tons of coal equivalent.

The excursion continued, other constructions were shown and explained what tasks are being performed with their help. Two blocks pumping stations bring the cooling water to Lukoml lake and back. The lake is used as a natural cooling pound. Chef Engineer also informed, that PP provide the heating system for Novolukoml town.  He told about the natural gas regulation centers, which prepares and distributes gas for its further use. Hat is important to know, that at gas-distribution station small energy recovery facility with the capacity of 5 MWe  was installed. The main aim of generation unit is to reduce the pressure of natural gas via gas turbine and not via gas throttling.

Due to the commissioning of the Ostrovets nuclear power plant in nearest future,  the next measures for sustainable and effective operation of  Lukomlskaya PP are going to be taken:

1) CCGT and two 300 MW units will continue to operate permanently, the rest generation units will remain in the reserve of the power plant;

2) The CCGT will continue to operate in the regular mode and the start-up boiler house will be put into operation, in order to quickly launch  all the PP equipment from the reserve.

Than the visiting group continued their trip to Vitebsk hydro power station - the most powerful in Belarus. It is located on the Western Dvina River, near Vitebsk. Students were met and guided by the head of the Vitebsk hydro power plant Oleg Trashkov.

The construction of the station was started in April 2013 by the Chinese company China National Electric Engeneering CO., Ltd. Designer - Beijing Design and Exploration Institute (Beijing Engineering Corporation Limited.). The construction was financed by a loan from the State Development Bank of China.

Oleg Trashkov told that the station was commissioned last July. And it is a typical low-pressure hydro power plant, which includes a concrete spillway dam, a ground dam, a hydro power generator, a single-chamber single-seabed shipping lock and a switchgear. Thanks to the bright sun, HPP appeared in all its glory.

The staff number of HPP is 30. The difference in water levels is 12 meters.

The capacity of the HPP is 40 MW, the average annual output is 138 million kWh. The HPP operation characteristics are fully correspond to chosen  design solution. The HPP is under operation for almost a year. There are four horizontal capsule hydraulic turbines in the building of the HPP (the diameter of the impeller is 3.95 m) with a capacity of 10 MW. The HPP's retaining structures form a reservoir with an area of 8.82 km² and a volume of 4.1 million m³, with its maximum width of 420 m and its maximum depth of 14 m.

The visitors got acquainted with the territory, and each element of the structures, history of how the Vitebsk hydroelectric power station was built. Students went into the engine room, examined all the equipment from outside, asked questions and got competent answers. They admired the station has a navigable lock which allows passage of vessels in both directions. It is interesting that for 1 pass of water takes so much that it would be enough for the operation of all the generators at full power 90 seconds. It was also an unpleasant surprise that the payback period of HPP is 28 years.

after visiting the energy units, students didn’t pay  much attention to historical and cultural sights of Vitebsk. They attended shortly  the Assumption Cathedral, which amazed with its grandeur and beauty, as well as City Hall, a monument to the prince Olgerd. Everyone could go along the Pushkin’s’ Bridge to see the monument of Alexander Pushkin. visitors discovered a wonderful view that opens from the top of the cathedral.

All students are very grateful to Dean K.V. Dobrego, to the teachers of POWER ENGINEERING FACULTY, the chef managers from Belenergo, Minskenergo, Vitebskenergo. It was a great opportunity to visit the existing energy generation units. Students got acquainted with the equipment which they are studying. There are still a lot of positive impressions. We hope that such trips to be continued and students who want to learn more about energy will have the opportunity to acquire this knowledge in practice.
