The department "Standardization, Metrology and Information Systems" (SMIS) was founded in 1961 as a department for the training of instrument engineers and is today one of the oldest structural divisions of BNTU.
• a general technical department that teaches the basics of standardization, certification and quality management as part of the training of engineers of various profiles at 10 faculties of BNTU (mechanical engineering, instrumentation, automotive, metallurgy, energy, construction, road construction, sectoral economics and management, customs, etc.). );
• a specialized department that graduates specialized specialists.
As a specialized department, the SMIS department implements a comprehensive four-level training program for specialists in the field of metrology, standardization and engineering quality management: "student - undergraduate - postgraduate - doctoral student".
Since 1995, the SMIS department has been the base department of the State Committee for Standardization of the Republic of Belarus (Gosstandart). The SMIS department has two officially accredited branches based on the leading research institutes of the State Standard: Belarusian State Institute for Standardization and Certification (BelGISS) https://belgiss.by , Belarusian State Institute of Metrology (BelGIM) http://www.belgim.by.
The process of creating, implementing and improving a comprehensive multi-level training program in the field of standardization, quality management and metrology, the SMIS department harmonizes with the activities carried out by the State Standard, the Department of Quality Management Methodology of the Ministry of Industry, the Ministry of Architecture and Construction of the Republic of Belarus, and other departments.
Scientific and industrial relations with the institutes of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS of Belarus), industrial enterprises and organizations of various profiles are maintained and constantly expanded. The Department of SMIS is known abroad, closely cooperates with technical universities and standardization and quality management organizations in such countries as Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China.
