The history of the creation of the military-technical faculty at the Belarusian National Technical University is rooted in the history of the creation of the military department of the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute.
In 1920, on the basis of the industry-specific Minsk Chemical-Technological, Construction, Energy, Peat, Food and Gorki Water and Meliorative Institutes, the Belarusian Polytechnic Institute was re-established. The department of military and physical training was formed on the basis of the military department of the Minsk Civil Engineering Institute, which in 1933 joined the BPI.
Captain Vasily Nikolaevich Verichev was appointed head of the department (military leader).
The department of military and physical training of the BPI prepared reserve officers of engineering and technical services from senior students for divisions and units of the tank, engineering and chemical troops of the Red Army. The training period was one year.
The department was armed with 2 medium tanks, 2 armored vehicles, engineering vehicles, small arms, chemical equipment and drug kits.
During the Great Patriotic War, the BPI did not function. Department officers, faculty, graduate students and students of the BPI were mobilized and joined the army, went to partisan detachments and the Minsk underground.
With the end of the Great Patriotic War, teachers and students who were in the Soviet Army returned to the institute to work and study. Training sessions at the institute began on March 1, 1945.
Studies at the military department resumed in February 1945. Colonel Zhiganov Ivan Vasilyevich was appointed head of the department. Training profile - platoon commander and squad leader of sapper units and units. In the postwar years, the structure of the department is rapidly developing, the number of students studying at it is growing. Since 1974, the department has occupied a leading position among the military departments of the universities of the republic, the annual graduation was more than 1500 reserve officers.

As a result of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the formation and reform of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, the military department was characterized by a reduction in the number of teaching and educational support staff, as well as the number of students involved in military training. The meeting of teachers and students of the Belarusian State Polytechnic Academy with the President of the Republic of Belarus A.G. Lukashenko on December 30, 1994 contributed to the solution of many problems of the university and the military department. On June 11, 2003, the military department was reorganized into the military faculty.

In accordance with the order of the head of the faculty of February 9, 2006. No. 15 "On the establishment of an annual holiday - the Day of the formation of the military-technical faculty at BNTU" and on the basis of the decision of the Faculty Council of February 3, 2006, protocol No. 2, June 11, 2003 is considered the Faculty's founding day.
